Odisha has successfully implemented Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) across the state through the use of robust regulatory frameworks for urban local bodies. The state has ensured provisions for periodic desludging, safe transportation, and proper treatment of faecal waste, with the government using technology for monitoring and involving self-help groups and community members for awareness generation. As a result, there has been a significant improvement in the safety of sanitation workers and higher utilization rates of septage treatment plants.

Mastering Scheduled Desludging in Wai | India's Model Sanitation Cities

This video showcases a Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Model in Wai. Wai is one of the first towns in India to implement a scheduled desludging program and treat this waste in a safe manner through strong partnerships between the government and private sector and an independent financial model to ensure inclusive sanitation for its citizens. In population and size, Wai is representative of 7400+ towns in India, and thus its successful model of sanitation if replicated could potentially impact 150 million people who live in these towns or approximately 50% of India’s urban population.
